The new album Rx by Ryan Beaver is out today and I can honestly say he is my new favorite artist. This album is refreshing. He floats through modern country, traditional country, and folk with every track being radio ready. The video (featured below) for “Dark” was released last month and its a great introduction to Ryan’s sound and aesthetic.
The versatility Ryan shows on Rx is undeniable. Even though that hurts the chances of the album being one cohesive piece, it gives the listener the ever changing playlist they crave. This album’s fresh feel isn’t a coincidence. “This is my third album, but in a lot of ways it feels like it’s my first,” Ryan says, “I feel like I’ve reached the point where I know what a good song is, and I have a clear vision of what I want to accomplish.” Rx is an in-depth answer to the question “What happened to the great artists?”. Here he is. We’ve been so hung up on who’s bad that we forgot to look around for who could be great.
I know I’ve said this a million times but country music is too focused on pop crossovers when they should be focusing on folk and rock crossovers. It adds to the quality of country music, the lyrics, and the talent of the next string of newcomers. Keep artists like this coming and maybe I’ll be able to watch the award shows again. Alright, maybe not but you know what I mean!
Rx : 4/5 – Great album and my favorite new artist!
