I first ran across “Dollhouse” a hypnotic pop track last month. It stuck and by stuck I mean I was singing it in the shower before work, at work, and, in the car on the way home. Then I saw the dark, yet so sweet, video for “Carousel”. I was hooked like a kid on cotton candy. Meet Melanie Martinez my personal replacement for Ariana Grande. Her vocals are impeccable, her look is a spooky pop star dream, and her music is catchy without the mind numbing stupidity a lot of pop songs carry around.
Melanie’s debut album “Cry Baby” is coming out in August and with it comes a whole new group of quirky tracks. Don’t think she’s just the voice however. In an interview with DirectLyrics Melanie revealed how involved she was in the music video for the single “Pity Party” which is featured above.
“I was extremely involved! I used all my own vintage toys, I directed it, and I was in the editing section talking out shot by shot, exactly what I wanted and didn’t want.”
We were first introduced to Melanie by “The Voice”. Her acoustic cover of Britney Spears “Toxic” was a huge hit with audience members but she was already a star before the TV world got to see her. She is currently signed with Atlantic Records and has nothing stopping her from becoming the next (and best) young woman to take over your local radio.
Watch out pop tarts! We have a real contender on our hands.
